she never listens.

And back in the states, there was 10-year-old niece, watching news of hurricane approaching central Mexico:

"Isn't Miwa in Mexico?" asks niece, with concern.
"Are you worried about her?"
Says niece gravely, "I told her to, but she didn't PACK A JACKET."

Whatever weather we did encounter was more tropical storm than hurricane, but admittedly, a jacket? It would have been nice.

disaster in our wake.

Inevitably, if you are going to go on a surf trip with E, there will be flooding, missed flights, food poisoning, and perhaps a broken board. I won't say much more about our trip to Mexico, except that it was with E. And for that reason alone, it was... awesome.

it was almost all worth it.

So, payoff for all that painful studying was a weeklong field study trip on Catalina island. By my own design, much more field, much less study.

Yes, some observations on surface kelp cover were made. But more so, Catalina was: amazing morning runs, afternoon snorkeling, sunset swims, and many hours of happy cruising around Two Harbors in a small skiff.

Oh, and also, two of my favorite "B" words: Beer and Buffalo.

Our campus buffalo, whom we will call Billy.
